Jim Jannard, the founder of The RED Digital Cinema and the Hydrogen phone project is retiring. As a consequence, RED’s Hydrogen phone project is shutting down. After just a single phone released by the company, it is sadly stopping the production of new phones.
Their first smartphone, RED Hydrogen One is an Android smartphone was officially announced on May 18, 2018, with a release date in August 2018. In the United States, this first product of theirs saw the light via AT&T and Verizon Wireless on November 2, 2018, after multiple delays.
The Hydrogen One smartphone came with new features like a « holographic display », a top-notch camera system, and modular attachments.
Why the project is shutting down
According to information from a post made by RED founder Jim Jannard in the RED Forum, the closure is owing to his health issues.
Jim Jannard, RED Project founder says» I have spent the past 45 years building “inventions wrapped in art”.
Just now turning 70 and having a few health issues, it is now time for me to retire.
I will be shutting down the HYDROGEN project, ending a career that has included Oakley, RED Digital Cinema and HYDROGEN. I am very proud to have worked with many great people over the years who have signed on to the vision. «
The shutting down of the project thus marks an end to the Hydrogen Two, which was to be built « virtually from scratch. »

Although RED’s Hydrogen phone project is shutting down, this news shouldn’t scare you if you have the Hydrogen One. Jim Jannard promises there will be continues support.
